There is no doubt that thrifting culture is evolving in Hong Kong. Thrifting and sustainable shopping have become a cornerstone for HK’s teens, with many finding the perfect going out outfit from secondhand shops such as Mee & Gee, Salvation Army and others alike. From Y2K low cut jeans, bedazzled shirts to vintage bags, these shops offer gems that can’t be found anywhere else in Hong Kong without breaking the  bank.

Fueled by social media trends, the stigma of thrifting is also starting to dissipate and changing the way secondhand shopping is being viewed by the public.  I too have had a negative perception of thrifting or buying anything secondhand, being concerned over cleanliness of previously owned items.  After seeing my friends' cool finds and trends on social media, trying out thrifting felt like a refreshing alternative to fast fashion and I was hooked!

Some of my favourite pieces come from the Castaways Charity Shop in St John’s Cathedral in Central. I have found the most stunning designer bags and items at brilliant prices, with the staff being very accommodating and friendly to interact with. One of my favourite finds is this vintage Coach bag with a jewel adorned buckle. Besides some stains inside the bag, once gently cleaned, it was as good as new!  I have also found brands such as  Champion and Tommy Hilfiger going for a fraction of their original prices. Definitely a must visit if you’re interested in thrifting in Hong Kong.

As thrifting’s popularity grows, teens are growing more conscious of how they consume and what stores they should support.  Some of my friends struggle to thrift in Hong Kong because it's a hassle finding secondhand stores and it takes up too much time. One way that DTM is changing the thrifting game in Hong Kong is with  its online platform, making it easy for my friends and I to browse their catalogue of products  ranging from clothing, to books, and much more. Additionally, DTM offers a swapping trading option, where you can upload items to swap with others in the community using DTM Credits instead of cash. When posting something on DTM you can also pick a charity of your choice to donate to, encouraging a message that anyone can have an impact and a voice.

Let’s make 2025 the year you start sustainable shopping, and having an impact, big or small everyday!
